The St. Nicholas parades in their form that still exist today are most likely a remnant of old St. Nicholas games, which were mentioned in documents in the Tyrolean region as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. In our area, these St. Nicholas games were spread by the miners who worked in the mines here. The miners came from a wide variety of areas in Germany.

Every year on December 5th at 6 p.m. in Sterzing the traditional parade of St. Nicholas takes place through the streets of the city center. While the Farmhand Ruprecht and Nikolaus hand out small presents to the children, the Krampus keep things tidy and make for many a black face.

The soot and fat make-up of the Krampus can stain your clothes.
We ask you to take this into account when choosing your clothes.
